Watches & Warnings

Areal Flood Advisory
Issued: 12:42 AM EDT Jul. 20, 2019 – National Weather Service

... The urban and small stream flood advisory remains in effect until
230 am EDT for southern Mecklenburg and northeastern York counties...

At 1236 am EDT, gauge reports indicated a number of creeks have
risen sharply in the advisory area following earlier rainfall. Up to
two inches of rain have fallen since 930 PM EDT. McMullen creek has
risen almost as high as Addison drive near Lincrest place. This
creek and others in the area will slowly recede through the early
morning hours.

Some locations that will experience flooding include...
southeast Charlotte, Matthews, Mint Hill, Pineville, Steele creek,
the arboretum, Carowinds, and Southpark mall.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Heavy rainfall will cause ponding of water in urban areas, streets
and underpasses, as well as other poor drainage areas and low lying
spots. Rapid rises on small creeks and streams will also occur,
possibly flooding low water crossings and farmland. Do not attempt
to travel across flooded roads. Turn around, dont drown.

Heat Advisory
Issued: 7:41 PM EDT Jul. 19, 2019 – National Weather Service

... Heat advisory remains in effect from noon to 8 PM EDT
Saturday...

* locations... counties along and east of Interstate 77 in the
North Carolina Piedmont and eastern South Carolina upstate,
including Gaston County.

* Timing... Saturday afternoon and early evening.

* Impacts... the heat and humidity may cause heat stress during
outdoor exertion or extended exposure.

* Heat index values... up to 105 due to temperatures in the mid
90s, and dew point temperatures in the lower 70s.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is
expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity
will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are
possible. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned
room, stay out of the sun, and check in on relatives and
neighbors.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible
and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by
heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke
is an emergency, call 9 1 1.
