Areal Flood Advisory
Issued: 6:33 AM CDT Jul. 21, 2019 – National Weather Service

... The flood advisory remains in effect until 730 am CDT for Southern
Lake and northern Cook counties...

At 630 am CDT, Doppler radar indicated scattered thunderstorms
across the advisory area. Up to a little over two inches of rain
have already fallen early this morning from thunderstorms. This
additional rainfall will likely continue minor flooding in the
advisory area.

Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Arlington Heights, South Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Lake Zurich,
Wheeling, Deerfield, and Highland Park.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as
well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

A flood advisory means river or stream flows are elevated, or ponding
of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.

Beach Hazard Statement
Issued: 4:17 AM CDT Jul. 21, 2019 – National Weather Service

... Beach hazards statement in effect from 1 PM CDT this afternoon
through late Monday night...

The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a beach
hazards statement... which is in effect from 1 PM CDT this
afternoon through late Monday night.

* Location... Lake Michigan beaches and shoreline of lake and
Porter counties in Indiana and Cook County in Illinois.

* High wave action and dangerous swimming conditions expected.

* Forecast wave heights... 4 to 6 ft.

* Strong rip currents and structural currents expected.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Life threatening waves and currents are expected at the beaches.
People visiting the beaches should stay out of the water.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in
sandbars. Rip currents can sweep you into deeper water.

Structural currents form along piers where longshore currents and
wave action flow into the structure. Structural currents can
sweep you into deeper water along the pier structure.

Exposed beaches are more likely to experience the most
significant wave and current impacts. Impacts at beaches with
protective breakwalls or jetties will be subject to the
orientation of structures as well as wind and wave direction.
