Coastal Hazard Statement
Issued: 3:31 AM EDT Sep. 18, 2019 – National Weather Service

... High rip current risk now in effect through Friday evening...

* locations... Atlantic Ocean beaches of Kings (brooklyn),
southwestern Suffolk, southeastern Suffolk, southern Queens and
southern Nassau.

* Timing... through Friday evening.

* Surf zone impacts... dangerous rip currents are expected through
Friday evening, possibly continuing into Saturday. High surf of
5 to 8 feet is possible Thursday through Friday. Beach flooding
and erosion are possible during the times of high tide.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in
sandbars and near structures such as groins, jetties, and piers.
Talk to lifeguards and beach officials to learn about any surf
hazards and heed their advice. Pay attention to flags and posted
signs and swim in life guarded areas.

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and
float, and do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a
direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the
shore and call or wave for help.
