Watches & Warnings

Heat Advisory, Excessive Heat Watch
Issued: 4:23 AM EDT Jul. 19, 2019 – National Weather Service

... Heat advisory remains in effect from noon today to 7 PM EDT
this evening...

... Excessive heat watch remains in effect from Saturday morning
through Sunday evening...

* heat index values... around 105 degrees this afternoon, rising
to between 110 to 113 degrees Saturday and Sunday.

* Timing... heat advisory today, then excessive heat watches this
weekend. The most dangerous time will be between noon and 7 PM
today, then all of the weekend. It will not cool below 80 over
many areas until 4 or 5 in the morning.

* Impacts... dangerously high temperatures and humidity could
quickly cause heat stress or heat stroke if precautions are not
taken. The urban areas around the Triangle, Fayetteville,
Goldsboro and other cities are more vulnerable in a heat wave
as they are known as heat islands, as they will be the even
hotter during the day and the last to cool at night.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is
expected. Hot temperatures and high humidity will create a
situation in which heat illnesses are possible.

An excessive heat watch means that a prolonged period of hot
temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and
high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in
which heat illnesses are possible. Drink plenty of fluids, stay
in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on
relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions if you must work or spend time outside.
When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning
or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and
heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when
possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by
heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke
is an emergency - call 911.
