Areal Flood Warning
Issued: 4:30 PM EDT Apr. 24, 2018 – National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has extended
the

* Flood Warning for small streams in...
southern McDowell County in western North Carolina...
central Burke County in western North Carolina...

* until 730 PM EDT.

* At 423 PM EDT, the Johns River gauge at arney's store, north of
Morganton was still above flood stage, but was slowly falling.
Heavy rain had fallen earlier, but little additional rain is
expected through this evening.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Marion, Glen Alpine, Old Fort, Lake James State Park, Lake James,
Nebo, Pleasant Gardens, Oak Hill, Morganton and lake Rhodhiss.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Do not attempt to cross
water-covered roadways, bridges, or low-level crossings. Only a few
inches of rapidly flowing water can carry away your vehicle. It is
not Worth the risk. Please turn around, don't drown.

Numerous roads, parking lots and bridges will be threatened by heavy
rain and rapidly rising streams and creeks. Please pay close
attention to Road signs indicating a flood-prone area. Obey all
barricades, even if water is not currently over the Road. Barricades
are in place for your protection and indicate areas where flooding
can occur rapidly and without warning.

When it is safe to do so, please report flood waters or landslides
flowing over roads or threatening property to the National Weather
Service by calling toll free, 1, 800, 2 6 7, 8 1 0 1, by posting on
our facebook Page, or via twitter using hashtag nwsgsp. Your message
should describe the event and the specific location where it
occurred, including roadways, nearby cross streets, stream names and
other landmarks.

north central Catawba County in the Piedmont of North Carolina...
southern Alexander County in the Piedmont of North Carolina...
west central Iredell County in the Piedmont of North Carolina...
southeastern Caldwell County in western North Carolina...
east central Burke County in western North Carolina...

* until 745 PM EDT.

* At 539 PM EDT, minor flooding was occurring in the advisory area,
due to runoff and back-water effects from earlier heavy rain.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
St. Stephens, sawmills, Granite Falls, Bethlehem, Connelly Springs,
Rutherford College, Rhodhiss, Lake Rhodhiss, Lake Hickory and
Lookout Shoals Lake.

* According to the Duke energy website, Lookout Shoals Lake was
running at 100.8 ft, which is about one foot above full pool. It
may rise one or two more feet, but is not expected to exceed 103
ft, when Duke energy operators are expected to open The Gate at
the dam. The operators will continue to make gate adjustments at
the Oxford stations as well. In the meantime, flooding along the
Lake Shores of Lookout Shoals Lake, lake Rhodhiss, and Lake
Hickory can be expected. For more information, please check out
