Flood Warning, Areal Flood Warning
Issued: 3:20 PM CDT May. 25, 2019 – National Weather Service

The Flood Warning continues for
the Little Arkansas River near Halstead.
* Until late Wednesday night.
* At 2:30 PM Saturday the stage was 25.8 feet.
* Flood stage is 25.0 feet.
* Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... the river will continue rising to near 26.9 feet by
Tuesday morning. The river will fall below flood stage Wednesday
early afternoon.
* Impact... at 27.0 feet... water covers the westbound Lane of Highway
50 at mile marker 262. Flood waters cover Halstead Road on the
north end of city and also on k89 or hertzler Road leading into
Halstead from the north. Flood gates on west end of Halstead will
be closed. The second flood gate by the Railroad on the east side
of Halstead closes around 27.2 feet.

The National Weather Service in Wichita, KS has issued a

* Flood Warning for
the Little Arkansas River at Alta Mills.
* From late tonight until Wednesday afternoon.
* At 2:16 PM Saturday the stage was 20.3 feet.
* Flood stage is 22.0 feet.
* Minor flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... rise above flood stage by early Sunday morning and
continue to rise to near 24.8 feet by Monday early afternoon. The
river will fall below flood stage by Wednesday morning.
* Impact... at 25.0 feet... about a 500 ft wide overflow may be expected
across Highway 50, located about 6 miles south of the gage site
around River Park Road. Directly south of the gage expect the low
lying area to be inundated for a few miles. North of the gage,
overflow may be about half mile wide. Expect fields and cropland to
be flooded.

* Significant flooding ongoing across the area.

* At 1031 am CDT, widespread flooding continued across a large
portion of central, south-central, and southeast Kansas. One to
five inches of rain has fallen in this area over the past 24
hours, which has exacerbated ongoing flooding from heavy rains
over the past week. Additional heavy rainfall is expected through
tonight, with continued and worsening flooding expected.

* This is a serious flooding situation with no immediate end in
sight. Areas that have not yet flooded may soon as additional
rainfall moves over the area this evening. Areas will flood that
do not normally flood. Roads may be damaged or impassable. Water
will enter some homes and businesses. Please closely monitor water
levels in your area as rain moves back in and please heed Road
closures and statements from local officials.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Wichita, Hutchinson, Derby, Newton, Great Bend, El Dorado, Arkansas
City, Winfield, Andover, Haysville, Parsons, Coffeyville,
Independence, Augusta, Chanute, Wellington, Park city, Valley
Center, Bel Aire and Mulvane.

This includes the following highways...
Interstate 135 between mile markers 0 and 42.
Interstate 35 between mile markers 1 and 115.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as
well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* portions of central Kansas and south central Kansas, including
the following areas, in central Kansas, Chase, Marion,
McPherson, Rice, and Saline. In south central Kansas, Harper,
Harvey, Kingman, Reno, Sedgwick, and Sumner.

* Through Sunday morning.

* Additional thunderstorms are expected tonight across the
region. High rainfall rates and associated flash flooding will
be possible with any of this activity.

* Rapidly rising water can wash cars away and quickly flood
homes. In addition to the flash flood threat, rivers and
creeks will quickly rise, exacerbating the ongoing flooding.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions would likely develop
that would cause flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very
dangerous situation. Remember to turn around, don't drown,
especially at night. All forecasts should be monitored closely!
Be prepared to take immediate action should flash flood warnings
be issued. Those living along or near creeks and streams are
especially at risk.

Lindsborg, Hillsboro, Halstead, North Newton, Moundridge, Sedgwick,
Inman, Colwich, Burrton, Galva, Mount Hope, Canton, Whitewater and

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with these storms, and may lead
