Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Salt Lake City Utah
948 am MDT Fri Aug 23 2019

Synopsis...an upper trough will continue slowly east across the
northern rockies today. Weak ridging aloft will return this
weekend, maintaining dry conditions and seasonally warm temperatures.
A weather disturbance moving through the northern rockies late
Sunday will bring slightly below average temperatures back to the
area at the start of week.

&&

Discussion...the upper trough extending from central Montana
south into northeast Utah will continue on a slow eastward track
out of Utah today. The lingering light showers along the southern
end of this trough will exit northeast Utah later this afternoon.
The stable air mass trailing the trough will maintain mostly clear
to partly cloudy skies across the remainder of the forecast area.
Temperatures will come in a little cooler this afternoon, with
readings generally running at to a little below normal areawide.

Anticipating a dry weekend as a stable west-northwest flow aloft
exists across the region. Pockets of available moisture (pwat
values around 0.50") suggest some afternoon terrain-tied
convective cloud cover both days. Any showers or thunderstorms
that do manage to develop will be high-based and likely to produce
little more than a few sprinkles over the higher terrain.

Somewhat drier will be ushered into the area by a weak shortwave
moving east through the northern rockies late Sunday/early Monday.
A shallow surface boundary will likely drift south into northern
Utah Monday, leading to slightly cooler temps up north and little
change down south to begin the week.

&&

Aviation...light and variable winds at the slc terminal will become
northwesterly after 16z.
