Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Sioux Falls South Dakota
530 PM CST Sat Dec 14 2019

Short term...(this evening through sunday)
issued at 141 PM CST Sat Dec 14 2019

Temperatures have struggled to get out of the single digits and low
teens this afternoon, as a Canadian high pressure is firmly in
place. Winds will become light and variable overnight, but falling
temperatures will keep apparent temperatures in the zero to 15 below
zero range.

The region remains north of the jet stream on Sunday, but a weak
shortwave moving through the jet will produce just enough lift for
light snow along the Missouri River corridor. Very little
accumulation is expected, but despite forecast amounts under an
inch, slick surfaces are still possible, so travel with caution.

Long term...(sunday night through saturday)
issued at 141 PM CST Sat Dec 14 2019

The week ahead looks very quiet weather-wise, with the region
remaining under the influence of northwesterly flow aloft. Monday
and Tuesday will be dry, with afternoon temperatures in the teens
and 20s. Temperatures warm to above seasonal normals on Wednesday
and Thursday as a weak ridge moves across the plains. Sioux City
could approach 40 degrees both days. A cut-off upper level low
moving off The Rockies could bring light snow on Friday, but model
differences are quite large 130 hours from now, with some models
keeping this wave far enough south to avoid any snow for siouxland.
Next weekend also currently look dry and seasonal, but confidence
remains low for this time period.

Aviation...(for the 00z tafs through 00z Sunday evening)
issued at 519 PM CST Sat Dec 14 2019

Low to mid clouds will continue to move east/southeast into the
region this evening, bringing MVFR conditions mainly early Sunday
morning. Light snow/flurries will be possible along the Missouri
River, but no major impacts are expected at the terminals. Winds
will remain on the light side and will shift to the south as the
high pressure system moves eastward.
