Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Eureka California
248 PM PDT Thu Sep 19 2019

Synopsis...a warming and drying trend will continue into the
weekend. The next chance for rain will be on Sunday across del
norte and northern Humboldt County, but amounts are expected to
be light.

Discussion...skies have been partly to mostly sunny across the
area today with lingering cumulus clouds over the interior.
Temperatures are expected to drop to near or slightly below
readings last night. There may be a few locations near Ruth that
drop below 40 degrees. The evening shift will continue to monitor
trends, but, at this time, frost is not anticipated below 3000 ft

A ridge of high pressure will build over the area through the end
of the week. This will continue to Foster dry weather with warmer
interior temperatures. GFS and European model (ecmwf) models continue to fluctuate
a bit on the S extent of light rains and overall amounts on
Sunday, but there was not enough of a difference from the previous
forecast to warrant any change to pop grids at this time. Light
rain is expected to approach the north portion of the area on Sunday,
with the bulk of the rain staying north of the or/California border.
Temperatures will drop back to near normal around this time, then
climb back to above normal by early next week, particularly across
the interior. /Sec

Aviation...VFR conditions will prevail through the forecast period
as a trough over the Great Basin moves eastward while a ridge builds
toward the West Coast. This pattern will promote drying of the air
mass as well as periods of breezy/gusty north-northwest winds during the
afternoon and evening hours through Friday. Some patches of low
clouds will still be possible, primarily over the interior valleys,
during the overnight/early morning hours.

Marine...high pressure offshore coupled with a trough near the
California coast will maintain fresh to strong northerly breezes as
well as steep waves through Friday. Northerly winds will ease up
over the weekend, primarily north of Cape Mendocino, as a trough
approaches from the northwest. Northerly winds and seas will likely ramp up
after this trough passes over the area. Gale force conditions will
be possible, primarily across the southern waters, Monday and
Tuesday. Also, a mid period northwest swell will continue to subside
tonight. Another mid period northwest swell will arrive over the weekend
followed by another small northwest swell early next week.
